St. Peter’s Basilica with the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums, the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Campo de’ Fiori, Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square) and Piazza del Popolo… Rome, well known from guidebooks and books on art history. Rome, historical, touristy, a place of pilgrimage… We decided to discover ‘our’ Rome – a city where several million residents mingle with tens of millions of tourists every year. Everyday Rome. Friday. The fatigue of hours of travel completely disappears as soon as we sit down at the table in the home of our Roman friends. While waiting for the main course, we nibble on parmigiana – baked (and previously breaded in flour and egg, fried in olive oil) aubergines with tomato sauce and two types of cheese (including – as the name suggests – Parmesan). After a while, more antipasti appear on the table – courgette flowers, artichokes, aubergines and onions fried in a special batter. Crispy and delicate. Savouring the traditional cucina romana at a leisurely pace, we begin to enjoy our Italian weekend (…)
