Once upon a time in Flemish Venice…

Friday. Bruges is one of the most visited cities in Belgium – this first sentence from the guidebook should have immediately alarmed me, but the narrow, winding streets running between picturesque canals had charmed us a few months earlier while watching Martin McDonagh’s film ‘In Bruges’.

Bruges, in this original combination of comedy, drama, thriller and macabre bordering on surrealism (according to the Internet), is the charming setting for the forced holiday of two hired killers who romance, sightsee, get into arguments with a dwarf actor, and finally kill and are killed. The setting is a well-preserved medieval town.

That is why we chose Bruges for our weekend getaway this time. (…)
